My grand-mother and I decided to travel together to China for 2 months, retracing my grand-fathers last steps before he passed away.
My grand-parents lived in Paris for the past 40 years. They used to visit their native country China every summer before. Last year, in 2023, they both went to China for the first time since the lockdown period, after not being able to enter China for 5 years. A Taiwanese film crew team followed them on this memorable trip, to document my grand-fathers projects in China and Taiwan.
On the plane back, from Shanghai to Paris, my grand-father got unwell, and passed away 3 days later in Paris.
Together with my grand-mother, Nai-Nai, we wanted to revisit all the memories left behind. In the corner of the streets they used to pass by holding eachother’s arms. In the restaurants they used to share meals. We went to the same aiport, breakfast place, took the same boat, booked to the same hotel. But this time it was just me and her.
Aside of a being part of a mourning ritual, this was a testimony of time passing by and life forms etching themeselves in stone, the urge to capture memories and eternalise as much as possible of what remains.
